AIRS Temperature Anomaly Trends, 2002-2020

The animation shows the monthly AIRS IR Only v7 temperature anomaly from the L3 support product over the AIRS record (2002-2020). The top row shows maps of the global anomaly while the bottom row shows the global mean anomaly. The anomaly is calculated by removing the seasonal, ENSO, and QBO cycle from the AIRS temperature. Results are aggregated into five vertical categories spanning the entire profile. There is a warming trend in the lower troposphere and a strong cooling trend in the upper stratosphere. Validation of trends seen in the AIRS data is an on-going process and results shown in this visualization are preliminary.
