National Academy of Sciences report on the transport of pollution features AIRS animation

September 30, 2009

An AIRS animation of the transport of carbon dioxide around the globe is featured in the release of a new National Academy of Sciences report on the international transport of pollution. The report, titled Global Sources of Local Pollution: An Assessment of Long-Range Transport of Key Air Pollutants to and from the United States, was written to help policymakers and air quality managers better understand these issues.

The AIRS animation created by science team member Ed Olsen, is a time series that spans all of 2007. Added to the animation is a voice-over narrative provided by Dr. Wallace McMillan professor of physics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. McMillan, who uses AIRS data in his research, was interviewed by the NAS about his work on the global, regional, and local measurements of pollution.
