Q.  Is the surface air temperature retrieval algorithm the same as
temperature profile retrieval algorithm?  

A.  The surface air temperature retrieval is part of the unified algorithm
that creates the temperature profile.

Please use only data for which Qual_Temp_Profile_Bot = 0
You may also wish to ensure that Qual_Surf = 0.

Be especially careful with surface temperatures reported over deserts.
The surface emissivity has high spatial variability for bare earth,
and surface parameter retrievals in a 50km spot are problematical.
This can adversely affect the surface air temperature retrieval as well.
